Cherokee National Treasures

A Cherokee National Treasure is an incredible honor presented by the Cherokee people. Its distinguished recipients are individuals who have dedicated their lives to keeping the Cherokee art, language and culture alive through their crafts and work. The honor of being selected as a Cherokee National Treasure not only celebrates the recipient’s mastery and dedication of their art, but it also reaffirms the commitment Cherokee Nation has made to ensure that Cherokee culture and artistry is cherished and preserved for generations to come.

How do you become a Cherokee National Treasure?

Individuals who are 50 years or older OR have made major contributions towards perpetuating the Cherokee culture for a minimum of 20 years are nominated. Treasures are then chosen from those nominations by a selection committee.

When is the submission period for Cherokee National Treasure nominations?

Yearly nominations are accepted from early April through mid-June in nearly 30 categories, ranging from traditional foods and bow-making to beadwork, basketry and graphic arts. For questions or to request a nomination form, please send a note to [email protected]
